Repair and Restoration

Window and Door Woodwork

Older houses with wooden doors and windows often suffer from rot usually affecting the lower parts most where water becomes trapped. The door and window frames, door steps and window sills can also suffer. This leads to leaks, drafts and, in advanced cases, loss of structural integrity and so is best dealt with as soon as possible.

The repair service I offer restores the damaged area to its original beauty and functionality, hence avoiding need to replace the whole item. A complete replacement would be costly, particularly for listed buildings where uPVC is not allowed, and unnecessary as the undamaged woodwork would still perfectly serviceable with many more years of life left in it.

To repair the damaged area the rot is cut away, usually removing a small amount of healthy wood too, and a wood hardener/fungicide is applied to the exposed wood. New wood, which is of good quality and seasoned, is either spliced into the cut-away or used to reconstruct the rotted area depending on how bad the damage was.

This is the proper way to make these repairs and avoids the excessive use of fillers which are a temporary fix at best. The woodwork is then given three coats of external, weatherproof paint. A repair carried out like this should last at least 10 years.
